Why this Quit Smoking Method Works
This story starts for me the day I suffered a stroke as a result of years of smoking. Fortunately, I was left with no ill side effects.
As I was recovering in the hospital, I realised how lucky I was not to have suffered permanent damage. I began focusing on how I could quit smoking, believing it would be nearly impossible, but also knowing it was essential for my health and survival to do so.
The more I thought about giving up, I just couldn’t understand the thinking behind the “stop smoking treatments” using nicotine replacement therapy. It just didn’t seem right to me to replace the nicotine from a cigarette with nicotine from a lozenge, patch or chewing gum, as it’s the nicotine itself that creates the urge to want to continue smoking.
Maybe, that’s why giving up smoking - that way - is so hard.
However, if it was only about the nicotine in the cigarette, then there wouldn’t be a problem as it’s not the nicotine that kills you, it’s the carbon monoxide that is absorbed into your body that does the damage.
So, clearly, the first thing anyone would have to do, if they’re seriously trying to quit smoking, (to make it easy on themselves), would be to rid their body of nicotine as quickly as possible. Sounds pretty obvious, doesn't it?
It also became clear to me that nicotine is only half the problem when it comes to trying to quit smoking. The other half is the “habit mannerisms” you’ve developed which motivate you to automatically reach for a cigarette and light up, sometimes, without even knowing you’re doing so.
For example, you may have heard people say;
“... I was doing just fine trying to give up smoking … I hadn’t had a cigarette for “x” number of days … then I went out with some friends and had a few drinks… my willpower gave out and I had to have a cigarette … now I’m back on them and smoking more than ever …”
This habit mannerism is called an “event trigger”. It’s something you do that your mind associates with smoking. It could be sitting back in a chair in deep thought or contemplation, having a tea or coffee break, or even relaxing in front of the television.
While you’re trying to quit smoking, your mind’s urging you to reach for a cigarette when those (familiar) circumstances arise. The nicotine amplifies this “mind request” for a cigarette and giving up becomes even harder.
Anyone who has ever tried quitting smoking, knows that to be true, for sure!
Nicotine replacement therapies don’t address habit mannerisms by simply providing a quick nicotine “hit” in the form of a lozenge, tablet or chewing gum when it’s needed to quench the body’s desire, as it’s the nicotine that urges the mind to want a cigarette by activating these triggers in the first place.
It’s a vicious circle.
My understanding is that the sub-conscious mind doesn’t like change. It rebels against it, and, in the case of quitting smoking, its defence is to make it psychologically hard for you to do it.
Our Four (4) Step program “tricks” the mind into thinking you’re not really giving up smoking at all, and that's why it becomes EASY for you to do, because the mind doesn’t perceive a threat.
Although these event triggers still happen within the process, they’re, inconsequential, as you will be shown shortly. Eventually your “mind’s request” for a cigarette will disappear, due to the diminishing daily influence nicotine will have on your body.
Best of all, it will not leave you with any urges to want a cigarette in the future once you've given up or obsessions with food or other things the body wants in compensation for stopping smoking as some people suggest they experience when using the more conventional methods to do so. I didn’t experience any of these sensations, due to this technique’s very different approach.

- it rapidly reduces the nicotine in your body each day to lower your chemical dependent urge to smoke, and;
- it tricks your mind so you don't experience any of the withdrawal cravings which are normally associated with other stop smoking techniques.
